Dual Degree Programs

UMMS provides flexibility for students who wish to combine their medical education with a second advanced degree in many fields including biomedical sciences, business, public health, public policy, and science information.

For medical students seeking a master’s degree at the University of Michigan, an email will be sent to M3 medical students in mid-August to begin the Dual Degree endorsement process. The email will include a link to submit your Dual Degree Intent. After receipt of your intent form, a review of the applicant’s overall medical school performance will occur. For those students who have two or more I/A or a failure grade, even if remediated, more information may be requested, and your request will be reviewed by the Competency Committee for endorsement consideration. For all other students, you will be fast-track endorsed and no other information is required. Branches graduation requirements must still be met when completing a dual degree.

MD/MBA Dual Degree applicants only: Endorsed students will receive a reduction in Medical School Branch graduation requirements. The reduction is 1 month of Self-Directed Reflection and 1 month of a non-clinical elective from your Branches graduation requirements. Students must receive endorsement to receive the reduction of requirements.

Admission to the Graduate School is a separate application process and the responsibility of the student to contact the graduate school for all master’s degree and application process information. For most master’s degrees, students must complete the application process through the Rackham Graduate School Admissions office. The exception, Ross Business School Admissions, School of Information and School of Public Health’s MPH and MHSA.

Dual Degrees are integrated programs, but there are differences between the Dual Degrees:

  • The MD/MBA, MD/MPP, and some MD/MPH are combined degrees that share the same degree citation and conferred only after the completion of both school degree requirements are complete.
  • All other Dual Degrees, initiated through Rackham Graduate School, are two different degree citations on the transcript and two separate diplomas.

Dual Degree Leave of Absence (LOA):

The medical student will be placed on an Educational LOA (EDRS) while completing their master’s degree, which is a medical student-initiated LOA. For information and steps to LOA, please visit the Leave of Absence/Return from Leave Process webpage located on the Med Students Gateway, under Student Business section.

ROSS BUSINESS SCHOOL: The M.B.A. portion of the dual degree is 45 credit hours. Students typically take a leave of absence from medical school between the third and fourth years of study to complete their business administration coursework. Students can complete the MBA summer internship between the fourth and fifth program years. During the student’s 5th year, they will spend one semester completing the MD requirements, and the other semester completing both Medical School and MBA requirements.

For medical students endorsed by the UMMS Competency Committee to complete a Dual Degree and are completing the MD/MBA Dual Degree only, these medical students are granted 8-weeks waived from their Medical School Branches Graduation Requirements. The requirements waived are one 4-week non-clinical elective and one 4-week Self-Directed Reflection.

The GMAT/GRE requirement is waived for University of Michigan Medical School students. On the Business School application, please answer "Yes" to the question, "Are you a current Law or Medical student at the University of Michigan?"
