Well-Being

Well-Being: Longitudinal, Iterative, and Individualized

Medical students are, almost by definition, resilient and flexible with a tremendous capacity to confront the unknown. The rigors of training, however, require a thoughtful and intentional approach to well-being.

The University of Michigan is broadly committed to a culture of well-being, a mandate that the Medical School aims to uphold. We strive for well-being and wellness to be integrated into all institutional units across the Medical School, including our pre-clinical curriculum and clinical experiences. Both structural and programmatic approaches are used to foster a culture of, and opportunities for, wellness.

Medical School Well-Being Steering Committee

Approach:

  • We take an intentional and proactive approach to well-being, thoughtfully working towards aligning institutional values and priorities with student needs and their experience in training.
  • We are committed to being accountable, transparent, and collaborative with our entire medical community.
  • We recognize wellbeing is connected to many facets of our students' lives, including their varied backgrounds and diverse life experiences.
  • We work to integrate this into our efforts.

Feedback & Collaboration:

Existing feedback channels through partners such as Student Diversity Council and Student Council will remain. Relevant concerns will then be brought to the Steering Committee.

Members:
Dr. Deb Berman (Assistant Dean of Admissions), Dr. Jennifer Imsande (M-Home Director), and representatives from Peer Support Advocates, the Medical Student Mental Health program, Student Diversity Council, M-Home, and Student Council
