Ophthalmology deals with the structure, function, diagnosis, and treatment of the eye and the visual system. This includes problems affecting the eye and its component structures, the eyelids, the orbit, and the visual pathways. Ophthalmologists are trained to provide patients with total eye care including medical and surgical interventions.
Ophthalmologists are medically trained to provide patients with total eye care using medical, surgical, and rehabilitative services. In so doing, an ophthalmologist prescribes vision services, including glasses and contact lenses. Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences includes: Comprehensive Ophthalmology and Cataract Surgery, Contact Lens, Cornea, Eye Plastic, Orbital and Facial Cosmetic Surgery, Glaucoma, LASIK and Refractive Surgery, Neuro-Ophthalmology, Ocular Oncology, Pediatric Ophthalmology and Adult Strabismus, PROSE, Retina and Uveitis, Thyroid Eye Disease
Residency Training
- Duration of training: Four years (1 transitional/preliminary + 3 Ophthalmology)
- Number of entering residency positions per year: 499 (2021)
- Type of Match: Early Match, U-M Ophthalmology program matches 7 residency positions annually
- Ophthalmology residency interviews generally begin early November and end the beginning of January
